Geological Problems Reported
The roof over most of the mine was 1.83 feet of black shale. Limestone was present above the black shale and formed the roof in some portions of the mine. The coal contained the gray shale blue band, charcoal partings, and pyrite lenses. The pyrite lenses were up to 5 inches by 12 inches, and were present throughout the coal, both vertically and laterally.
