Geological Problems Reported

The roof was composed of 2.5 inches of black shale under 12 to 18 inches of limestone cap rock. Few coal balls were found. A few horsebacks were noted in the coal. The coal had a uniform appearance, with a narrow pyrite streak near the top of the seam.

  2. The source map shows a slope and air slope formerly mined by William Rowden. Two of the unlocated mines at the back of this document reported under the Rowden name. The earlier mine operated from 1905 to 1919 (as J. C.,C. F., N. A., and Frank Rowden) and the later mine operated from 1917 to 1934 (as William, C. C., C. T., and C. F. Rowden). The Rowden Mine shown on the source map may have been leased by William Rowden and listed in the Coal Reports under the owner’s name.
