Geological Problems Reported
An abandoned mine filled with water was encountered. Pumping of 3,000 gallons per minute went on for 3 months before they could resume mining. The roof was black shale, ranging from 6 to 12 ft thick. The blue band was present in this mine as an 11 to 13 inch thick band of dirt and bone coal, at a height of 18 to 24 inches above the floor. Since this was difficult to separate from the coal and lowered the quality, the plan at one time was to mine only 4.5 to 5 ft of coal, above the blue band and dirt band and taking only 6 inches of the top coal (leaving the rest to support the roof; the top 2 ft was said to be poor quality). Other notes indicate the bottom coal (below the blue band) was mined over at least part of the mine, and that the quality varied. Pyrite was present in steaks and “sprangles” (apparently this term referred to patches of “leaf sulphur”, or pyrite that accumulated as a very thin coating on a small surface of coal), but no solid pyrite bands or nodules were seen. In places, knolls of limestone protruded up from the floor, cutting out nearly all the lower bench (below the blue band) of coal.

- ↑ Two feet of top coal was left to support the roof, and often 1 ft of bottom coal was not mined because of poor quality. The average thickness was reported as 8.0 to 9.0 ft.
