Geological Problems Reported
The roof consisted of 1 foot of limestone underlain by 2 to 4 feet of soft gray shale. The uppermost 6 inches of coal was shaly and was left in place to support the roof and protect the gray shale roof from moisture. The coal dipped to the southwest at a rate of about 1 foot of dip for every 100 feet of distance.
