Geological Problems Reported
Top coal (15 inches) was left to support the roof where the black shale was thick. The top coal was reported to have been drawn when abandoning the room. In other places, where the shale was thinner, only 4 to 8 inches of top coal was left, and this top coal was not always recovered. Numerous horizontal pyrite bands were present in the coal, but few pyrite balls were observed. The blue band was about 30 inches above the floor, and consisted of a hard, pyrite-rich clay. The fireclay floor did not heave.
