Geological Problems Reported

One northwest-trending fault was noted, with up to 1 foot vertical displacement. The roof was limestone up to 20 feet thick or up to 1 foot of black shale with concretions. Some slips were noted on the eastern side of the mine. The coal seam was very regular, with no horsebacks. An irregular pyrite band was sometimes present about 1 foot above the bottom of the coal. The underclay was 3 feet thick or more, but did not heave even when under water. The source map showed several caved areas in the southeastern part of the mine.
