Geological Problems Reported
The roof for the Herrin Coal was limestone and gray shale. The blue band averaged 1 inch thick, but ranged up to 3 inches in some places. The roof to the Springfield Coal was 6 to 12 inches of limestone cap rock that was about 4 feet above the coal. The interval between the limestone and the shale was mostly black shale with 4 to 6 inches of draw slate. Horsebacks were observed in the mine. The seam contained clay partings, generally 1/8 inch thick or less. The floor was a hard gray underclay.
