Geological Problems Reported

The overburden was about 15 feet of surficial materials, underlain by 3 to 6 feet of limestone, with 1 to 8 feet of soft gray shale directly over the coal. Some minor faults were seen, with only slight displacement of the beds. Impurities in the seam included clay lenses, bony coal bands, and pyrite bands. A few of the pyrite bands were more or less continuous, and some were up to 0.5 inches thick. Vertical fractures were filled with calcite facings. The blue band and its underside had pyrite lenses in bands or as laminations. Pyrite was more common as a filling of networks of vertical veinlets. These networks sometimes occurred as commonly as every 2 feet in horizontal spacing across an area of the pit. Clay bands were seen, but were not common in the pits.

Notes

  1. The area mined is much larger than expected for the reported production. The reported production would account for approximately 600 acres. The area shown on the accompanying maps for the Truax-Traer No. 1 Mine may have been mined by Burning Star Surface Mine (mine index 684).
  2. The 1926 company map was used to locate the tipple on the 1950 company map. Consequently, the 1926 company map was not scanned and georegistered.
