Geological Problems Reported
The coal was overlain by 5 to 6 feet of Dykersburg Shale. In the northern part of the pit, only a black shale was present directly over the coal. Some slip fractures were present in the seam. Pyrite was abundant in the cleats. The Herrin Coal was mined in a few places where it was not eroded under the glacial drift.

- ↑ The area shown on the accompanying map is smaller than expected for the reported production. Production indicates approximately 26 acres were mined. The Elk Mine probably included some of the area shown on the accompanying map as Main Line No. 2 Mine (mine index 2442).
