Geological Problems Reported
The seam was split into three benches. Surficial materials and 10.5 feet of rock overlay 1.4 to 1.9 feet of the upper split of coal, which pinched out southward and was not mined. Under the upper split was 9 feet of soft shale, 1.1 to 2.0 feet of coal (that ranged up to 4 feet locally). This middle split pinched out southward as well. The lower split was overlain by 10 feet of claystone and shale, then the 2.5 feet thick coal that was mined. This coal had abundant thin pyritic fusain partings. This lowest bench varied in thickness and may have split also. The dragline operator reported that the lowest bench had abundant clay dikes. All of these coals were fairly low quality coal, although it lacked major bedded impurities and nodules. The marine rock sequence over the coal implied high sulfur content.
