Geology
Geological Problems Reported
The mine was wet, and required pumping to keep water out of the workings. Generally, the water came from the slope entry to the mine, and 1 foot of bottom coal was left to keep machinery from getting bogged down in the underclay. The roof was parallel-laminated mudstone (Energy Shale) with siderite lenses up to a few inches in diameter. The concretions were usually 2 and 4 feet above the coal. Roof falls were common, with numerous areas noted on a sketch in the mine notes, as well as areas with cribbing, metal strapping, trusses and rails for additional support after falls. Generally, 1.5 feet of roof was mined with the coal for head clearance on travelways.
