Geological Problems Reported

Some parts of the mine had sandstone roof, and in other parts of the mine, the roof was shale, 3 feet thick or less, with the sandstone above the shale. It was more usual to have 2 to 6 inches of soft yellowish clay on top of the coal. In part of the mine, the top 1 to 4 feet of coal was rotten, and left in the mine as waste.
