Geological Problems Reported

The mine apparently closed because of an unwillingness or lack of ability to put in necessary safety enhancements, including an escape shaft and a rope stronger than hemp for the hoisting shaft. The traveling ways were also too narrow.

Notes

  1. There was no escape shaft. The 1884 Coal Report included a paragraph about most mines. The paragraph on the Dobbins Mine indicated that the mine would have to be shut down if several unsafe conditions were not remedied.
  2. The shaft was labeled on the WPA map as the Old Adams Mine.
  3. Production and years of operation before 1878 are not known. The 1879 Coal Report indicated 5 acres were mined. The mine was included on the 1875 atlas on land owned by W. T. Wylie.
  4. Production and years of operation before 1878 are not known. The 1879 Coal Report indicated 5 acres were mined.
