Geological Problems Reported

The mine was closed with no or very little production. Water well drilling in the vicinity led the investors to believe that they would hit a 5.0 feet thick seam of coal, but that was apparently a very localized feature for a seam that generally ran to 13 to 20 inches thick. The centennial souvenir book reported that salt water “filled the mine shaft within twenty-four hours”. The same source indicated that the shaft was properly filled (and presumably, sealed) in 1970.

Notes

  1. The 1893 Coal Report said the shaft under construction was “on the line of the Wabash Railroad”. The centennial souvenir book said the mine was east of the former Strasburg High School, and gave the landowner and former landowner (George Schlechte and Engel, respectively), but county plat books do not show landowners within town boundaries. W. A. Newton visited Strasburg in 1937, and a local man said the mine shaft was on the “east edge of town”. Consequently, the point shown on the accompanying map is in a general area that fits the location descriptions, but could be as much as 0.5 miles from the actual location.
  2. The mine location was plotted on a 1:24000 USGS topographic map from the mine location description and digitized.
