Geological Problems Reported
Some gas was present near the roof. Roof rolls came to within 2 feet of the floor. One roof fall of shale and limestone extended 50 feet long and 30 feet high. The roof conditions in the east side of the mine were “remarkably consistent”, and large rolls there were rare. The mine was described as dry, but the floor clay heaved when wet. A squeeze occurred in the east side of the mine in 1940 or shortly before.
