Geological Problems Reported
No horsebacks or rolls were encountered (before a mine note taken in 1931) and the coal was loaded directly from the pit. Concretions were found in some of the overlying black shale. A 3 foot layer of limestone was often found over the coal, and in some places, sandstone was the immediate roof to the coal. Pyrite was present as bands and lenses. Much of this separated easily from the coal and was not loaded.
