Geological Problems Reported
The mine began as a surface mine, then moved underground when the depth was too great to remove the overburden. The roof was said to be “fairly good”, with 3 to 4 inches of draw slate, 3 to 40 feet of white top, with bastard limestone above. (Note: Top coal may have been left to support the roof, because none of the described strata of the roof makes a competent roof.) A shale band occurred near the middle of the coal seam. The floor was 4 to 5 feet of underclay.
