Mining in the Millstadt Quadrangle

The earliest mining in the Millstadt Quadrangle was in Section 25 of T1S-R9W in 1842 (mine index 4301). Most of the underground mines of this area were small compared to those nearer Belleville. The main imprint left by mining here is from the large surface mines that operated from 1940 to 1970 and the Morgan surface-mining operations, which mined a pit for a few years before moving on to another location. These surface mines enlarged earlier small operations, mining through small underground mines so that no trace of these are left.

The Herrin Coal was the only seam mined near Millstadt. The only mine where geologic problems were noted indicated that coal balls were numerous in the roof and that the coal contained many slips. Perhaps the main difficulty in mining in this vicinity was the shallow depth of coal, which could not have lead to stable roof conditions and may have allowed water into the mines. These factors would not have interfered with the surface mining.
