Shipman Quadrangle
MINING IN THE SHIPMAN QUADRANGLE
Mining in the Shipman Quadrangle took place in the mainly in the Herrin Coal, with the exception of the Shipman Coal Company Mine (mine index 2910), which mined the Colchester Coal. Most mines were small, with the largest mine (mine index 7880) only mining out about 5 acres. Two shafts also reached coal, but were said to have never produced coal (mine indexes 7881 and 7882).
