Geological Problems Reported

The mine closed because of water breaking in from a creek on the surface. Pumping removed the water, but salvageable materials were removed and the mine closed after the flood.

  1. No air shafts were shown on the source maps. The 1885 Coal Report stated two upcast air shafts were in operation, and a new air shaft was noted in the 1889 Coal Report (1900 feet west of the hoist shaft, with a stairway men could use to get to the workplace).
  2. Production before July 1881 is unknown, but the 1882 Coal Report indicated 310 acres had been mined. According to Biography in Black, a History of Streator, Illinois, this mine opened in 1870 and the company merged with Chicago & Wilmington Coal Company in 1871.
