Geology
Geological Problems Reported
The mine probably had water problems. The shallow 45-ft depth of the mine, combined with a specific pump shaft (pump holes are common on mine maps, a drill hole large enough for a hose of some kind), indicates water problems may have been more severe than other mines in the region. The 1884 Coal Report indicated they abandoned a shaft and developed the property near the railroad track so that they would not have to haul their coal 1 mile. The pump shaft was probably the original shaft for the mine, and workings were extended so that the pump shaft could also be used for escapement. The roof was bad near the pump shaft.
