Geological Problems Reported

A fault with displacement of 10 feet was shown on the source map in the southwestern part of the mine. The western side was upthrown. An east-west trending fault was noted 1500 feet north of the shaft. Water entered the mine from water-bearing gravels in the overburden and caused weakness in the roof. Water was noted in the southernmost part of the center and the southeastern corner of the mine. The immediate roof was 15 to 18 feet of gray shale. The top bench of the coal was left to support the roof.
