Mining in the Ipava Quadrangle

Mining began in the Ipava area before 1871, as evidenced by the 1871 Atlas of Fulton County, Illinois. One mine was in the northeastern part of the quadrangle (mine index 7643 in 34-T5N-R2E), and the other two early mines were just northeast of Summum in 3-T3N-R2E (although they were later surface-mined and do not show on the accompanying maps). Almost all of the mining that took place in the Ipava Quadrangle consisted of small local mines that operated for a few years. Sun Spot Mine (mine index 865) is the only exception, operating from 1962 to 1983.

The Colchester Coal was available over most of the quadrangle, while the Springfield Coal was eroded away except for two large pod-shaped areas near Ipava and Summum.
